Barnabas

The following talk was given two days ago at the American Moslem Society (Dix masjid) in Dearborn, Michigan to a group of young Christian missionaries and their teachers/mentors.

 The following points were discussed:

1)      Monotheism – stressing the indivisible and flawless status of G-d.  Made direct reference to G-d never taking the shape of a man, having never begotten children and never needing to take a rest, which are three beliefs of Christians.

2)      Prophethood – stressing the universal teachings of the prophets of the Divine, which are monotheism, ethics and accountability that will reflect in humans’ positions in the after-life.  Mentioned that prophets are elected to be moral and ethical leaders and were guarded from the intention to commit grave sins, which made them models of imitation.  Specifically mentioned that Muslims reject that prophets were ever drunkards (the allegation that Noah got drunk and was seen to be so in front of his 3 sons while naked), were committers of incest (the allegation that Lot had sex with his daughters), or were philanderers (allegation that David sent a man off to be murdered so that he could steal his wife).

3)      Divine Scriptures – stressing the Qur’an is a confirmation of the Torah, Psalms and Gospels and a clarification of the present day versions of those books.  Mentioned the two forms of transmission of the Qur’an (oral and written) and its miraculous distinction as being the only scripture that is memorized verbatim by hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people.  Also made reference to the current day Gospels being based off Greek manuscripts that were written by people who never saw Jesus, that Jesus spoke Aramaic not Greek and that Jesus was not even his real name.

Such is not my normal discourse that I undertake with interfaith groups.  I normally stress similarities and only mention differences when asked about them.  However, this group that was addressed is organized by a Christian mission called Angel House in Dearborn.  They organize groups to come into mosques to learn about Islamic beliefs and manners with the intention to take this knowledge to convert Muslims to Christianity.

Since I am aware of their mission and have addressed them before, my presentation is based upon the Qur’an’s clarification of their creed.  The Muslims’ job is to simply convey the message of Al-Islam to whoever seeks it.  G-d guides whom He pleases and allows people to go astray.
