Today’s sermon discussed Al-amr bil ma’ruf wan nahy anyil munkar.
British Patrol (BP) catastrophe mentioned during lecture and the flotilla catastrophe.
Today’s sermon was delivered at the American Moslem Society mosque in Dearborn, MI to a predominately Yemeni-American audience.
Topics covered were:
1) The basic meaning of taqwa or having proper consciousness of G’d.
2) Taqwa gives spiritual insight that no university can give.
3) The protest in downtown Detroit in reaction to the terrorism trial of Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab and the distinction between condemning terrorism and being apologetic about terrorism falsely committed in the name of Al-Islam.
4) The last century of Muslims in Metro Detroit is a record of being law abiding citizens.
As the world remembers Michael Jackson after his demise, Muhammad Abdul-Aziz aka Jermaine Jackson gave an interview with Matt Lauer of the Today Show (Video) this morning that will surely further speculation as to whether his brother accepted Al-Islam.
Abdul-Aziz said (see 3:20 minute mark on video) that “Michael is a gift from Allah, and He [Allah] has taken him back.”
It is still unclear, however, that Michael, who allegedly changed his name to “Mikaeel” ever became Muslim. Myths have circulated that Dawud Wharnsby and Yusuf Islam discussed the Islamic religion with Michael and witnessed him becoming Muslim, claims that both have rejected on their blogs. According to a British tabloid, Michael was given his shahadatayn (witnessing the oneness of G-d and Muhammad being His messenger) at a home by an Imam; no one knows who this mystery Imam is however. This rumor was rebuked by Michael’s lawyer 3 days afterwards in the NY Daily News. Unfortunately, media outlets throughout the Muslim world carried the tabloid story without verifying the information and never aired or printed a correction given by Michael’s lawyer. Thus the story of his conversion mushroomed.
Going back to Abdul-Aziz’s interview, he made a couple of bizarre statements, probably due to the amount of stress, which he is under. He stated that he wished that he had died instead of Michael and that he spoke for Michael in times when Michael couldn’t speak for himself like Moses. Obviously, it is never fitting for a Muslim to wish death for himself/herself or that he/she dies in the place of another. Also, Aaron (Harun) was the prophet who Moses (Musa) prayed for as an assistant to aid him when he had a difficulty in speech.
One thing is for sure that we are a week into Michael’s death, Abdul-Aziz has not declared that Michael was a Muslim, and there has been no Janazah (Islamic funeral prayer) for Michael.
The drama continues…
It seems like confusion is still brewing whether Michael Jackson actually ever became a Muslim or not.
One urban legend that has circulated among Muslims, even repeated by Imams, is that Dawud Wharnsby, a Muslim musical artist, witnessed MJ taking his “shahadatayn” – bearing witness that there is only one G-d and that Muhammad ibn Abdullah is His messenger and the last prophet. Wharnsby stated on his blog that he never even met MJ, nor did he ever have the opportunity to discuss issues of faith with him.
Muslim singer Yusuf Islam also dismisses the urban legend as well that he witnessed MJ accepting Islam.
Now, stories are circulating that an Imam visited the Jackson family allegedly discussing burial arrangements. Who is this Imam? No one is sure.
If MJ died as a Muslim, may he be accepted as one and be granted Divine mercy.
MJ was definitely an artist whose impact was felt worldwide. I wonder, however, if Muslims are being overly anxious to claim him as among the fold out of sincere concern for his spirit in the life of the grave or to claim this world renowned (and repudiated to some) figure because of a collectively damaged ego and esteem.
Surely G-d knows best.
The King of Pop Michael Jackson died today at the age of 50.
In November 2008, a story broke in a British paper that Michael Jackson accepted Islam and changed his name to Mikaeel.
During this time, Jacko was being sued by a Bahraini prince for not paying him back set amount of money owed. After the suit was settled, Jacko’s lawyer proclaimed that Jacko was NOT A MUSLIM.
