Cultivate dialogue, peace

Despite our condemnation of the Israeli army killing hundreds of Gazan civilians and wounding thousands in their latest siege, we do not support equating the Nazi symbol with the Star of David as a few protestors displayed in a recent cease-fire rally in front of the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations — Michigan has consistently stated Islam enjoins respect for the sacred symbols of world religions. Moreover, David, whom this symbol signifies, is a revered prophet in Islam who is mentioned in the Quran, the holy book of Muslims. We encourage all within the various faith communities to cultivate dialogue and peace within our region and to refrain from using signs and slogans that further divisions.
